Xiamen Biological Environment - Avian Distribution Pattern

According to China faunal geographic division, Xiamen belongs to the Min-Guang coastal sub-region, South China in Oriental realm. Xiamen enjoys a diverse ecological environment including forest, wetland, farmland etc. and a pleasant climate with warm winters and cool summers, and offers habitat for a wide variety of birds. Early in, Foreign missionaries began collecting birds in Xiamen during the middle of the 18 century. Around 1860, Robert Swinhoe recorded 163 species of birds in Xiamen. Since its establishment the Xiamen Birdwatching Society (XBS) has recorded more than 290 species of birds in Xiamen.

Main work of Xiamen Birdwatching Society

(a) Promote awareness of bird-watching

XBS has 40 members. We help members to improve their bird watching skills through regular small-scale bird watching activities and courses. This also helps to increase the opportunities for experience and information exchange. We also encourage our members to organize bird surveys.
The last week of March is "Love the Birds Week" set up by the municipal government. XBWS has organized bird watching activities for cities in the last 3 years, introducing basic bird watching knowledge, and organizing bird watching activities, each time attracting almost 200 people.
We also help student societies in Xiamen and Jimei Universities to organize their own bird watching activities.
Publicizing bird watching information on local newspapers: XBS has a good relationship with local media. We publish monthly articles on bird watching and conservation in local newspapers. This helps to build a healthy social image of XBS and makes the XBS one of the best-known social groups in Xiamen.
We communicate actively with other bird watching societies: Since the 1st Dongting Lake Bird Race in 2002, XBS has shared skills and experience with other bird watching societies in mainland China. We have also sent teams to take part in the Fujian Birdwatching Competition in 2003, Dongzhai Bird Photography Competition in 2004, and recently co-organized a New Year bird watching even in Haifeng with Shenzhen Bird Watching Society and birdwatchers in Guangzhou.
Wild Bird Photography Exhibition: In July 2002 and March 2005, XBS held a public photography exhibition in Xiamen. The events were well received by Xiamen citizens. Members of XBS organized the production of exhibition boards and provided interpretation in urban parks, communities and schools.
Publication: XBS edited and published a guidebook on common birds in Xiamen - "Birds in Egret Island". It has also produce an internal quarterly communication publication "Bird Talk in Egret Island" which introduces the latest activities of XBS. Recently, XBS has been working with the Xiamen Forestry Bureau to produce a "Xiamen Wild Bird Photo Album".
(cool.gif Bird Surveys

Participated in the annual synchronized Asian Waterbird Census and the Black-faced Spoonbill International Census in January.
Organized quarterly site investigation on birds in Xiamen in 2004, covering 2 forest and 2 coastal habitats.
Investigation of the conservation of Chinese Crested Tern along the Fujian coast from October 2004 to October 2006. The survey was supported by RSPB. A survey of 60 islets were completed, and it recorded rare waterbirds including Chinese Crested Terns, Chinese Egret, Relict Gulls and information of 18 species of marine birds. The survey will be supported by WWF in the next two years.
Support bird investigation in other areas. For example, we sent members to participate the synchronized survey of wintering waterbirds in the middle and lower reaches of Yantze River in 2004 and 2005. We also helped Ninde Forestry Bureau to investigate seabirds in October 2003, and helped Wuyishan Nature Reserve with a bird survey in October 2004.
Database for bird surveys, in particular endangered birds and habitats. XBS facilitated ecological conservation actions. In May 2004, we found fishermen collecting eggs at Caiyu islet where Chinese Egrets and a large number of terns were found. We immediately contacted and won the support of the local forestry bureau and the Xinzai Village Committee, to develop education activities on wildlife conservation and relevant laws targeting local fishermen and distributed education materials to villagers and primary schools. The campaign successfully stopped egg collection at this site.
In June 2004, XBS called on protection of mangrove forest in Jimei Fenglin, through media support and the hotline of Xiamen Municipal government.
In March 2004, XBS submitted the Xiamen Government a proposal of Mt. Hutou Shan Egret Nature Reserve and a proposal on Dongkeng Nature Reserve.
In March 2005, XBS submitted a report on "Investigation of Birds on Islands along the Fujian coastline" to the Forestry, Marine and Fishery Bureau of Fujian Government. Recommendations on protection measures were also made.
In October 2003, we joined the ecological assessment at Maluan Bay wetland ecological demonstration area. We recommended revisions to the proposal, including making the site a more suitable environment for birds.
We have published an article on Xiamen Daily on forest farm improvement, and discussed problems in the process of forest farm improvement with the Xiamen Forestry Bureau.
We regularly report wild bird catching and trading activities to the government, and promote message of "love birds instead of caging birds" to citizens.
We help to take care of injured birds, in particular raptors. A total of 40 birds were saved.
© Explore Education model on ecological conservation

We offer lectures on bird watching and wetland conservation, to promote ecological conservation to primary schools and middle schools. XBS cooperates with the Education Bureau and schools to organize winter and summer camps. Now, the promotion focus has been changed from urban to rural areas, and the children in rural primary schools show more understanding of native birds. As a result, our lectures are well received.
